Can you activate a dll file in registry using ICP?

    Click: Start > Run

    Type: regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\downloadupdates.dll

    Then press enter
I have a .dll file I wish to activate in the registry. I can do it using the above way using the windows run feature.

Is there a way to do this in ICP? Thanks in advance

Yes, just select the file in the list and select the "Register OCX/DLL file" option in the Windows tab in the file options.

Re: Can you activate a dll file in registry using ICP?

    Hi, thanks for this

Will it work with XP 64 bit editions as I found issues with a beta tester with the above. He had to do it this way:

    regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW\downloadupdates.dll

The file is not a part of my installation so is there another way without selecting the file?

Re: Can you activate a dll file in registry using ICP?

I've managed to get the file from the other installer (just took it from the system32 directory).

So have included it in my installer. Do I need to have it install in order to register? (i.e. not have "do not install if file exists" ticked).

Also do I need the following option ticked:

    Increment DLL usage count
Adds 1 to the dll usage counter of this DLL. This counter is used to know how many applications use the DLL. When the uninstaller uninstalls the DLL, it decrements the counter and will uninstall the DLL if the counter is equal to 0, i.e. if the DLL is no longer used by any application.

Think I do need it checked because it is used by an application so can you just clarify this for me

Re: Can you activate a dll file in registry using ICP?

The Increment DLL usage count option should be checked for each shared DLL you install, i.e. if this DLL is shared by several products, so that the uninstallers knows if other programs use it.

I've managed to get the file from the other installer (just took it from the system32 directory).
Do not do that! I think there are specific versions of regsvr32 for each version of Windows.

    Hmm... it should work.

On Windows XP (or previous versions of Windows), IC doesn't use regsvr32 though, it directly calls the DLL entry point to register it. It calls regsvr32 only on Vista. I wonder if we should call it on XP too, maybe MS has made a specific version for Windows 64 bits... We'll do it in the next update.

Re: Can you activate a dll file in registry using ICP?

If I include the file within the installer but choose not to install it if the file already exists would it still activate it even if not installed?

    Thanks for the advice

You should not include this file in the installer. If for some reason it's not installed on the user machine and you install a wrong version that can cause problems.

I'll send you a pre-version of the next build so that you see if it solves your issue on this user's machine.

Re: Can you activate a dll file in registry using ICP?

I only want to know if it will activate in the registry when the option 'Do not install if ... A file with the same name is already installed' is ticked.

If this option is ticked, I know the file won't install so just need to know if the registry item will be activated.

Sorry my bad English must be confusing you. There is nothing wrong with the installer with regards to 64 bit. He used the manual way when entering the 32 bit instruction. It was a difference in the system folder name that's all.

All that I want is to activate this dll file in the registry.

I have a program which installs, then I run my installer to update some files but I need to activate the dll file which was installed by the other program.

Got it working. The dll file does not overwrite and the registry does seem to have it activated after running the installer. Thanks anyways
