    Collision Masks?

    this is probably a silly question but what are collision masks and what are they commonly used for?

    A mask is a sprite that is used for collision checking instead of the original sprite.

    Those are used for advanced custom movement engines, or for platform movement-based enemy AI. You define a point (usually from an active object) as being over an obstacle backdrop or a ladder. But ladders will always behave as "Collision with box"!
    For an example of his this can be used, check out the tutorials for the Advanced Platform Movement object (one of the samples uses the collision mask with ladders) or this tutorial on multiple platform movement enemies, which uses a combonation of the collision mask and value spreading in loops.
