How does Lacewing currently handle peer messages? Do they go directly from peer to peer or are they relayed through the server?

Peer messages are relayed through the server, yeah (the opposite wouldn't really make sense)

Everything is relayed through the server - the peers don't even know the IP address of other peers. That means only the server needs to have ports forwarded.

Hmm... I see. But this also means the server will need bandwidth equal to all the messages sent between peers. Or is the relaying done at the connection level?

The server does need bandwidth equal to all the messages sent by the peers, yes. And that's how all online games work, so..
