"Path Find" & "Advanced Path Movement" extensions

    Hi guys!

I'm struggling with kind of "point 'n' click" game". I would like to use "Path Find" extension. But the documentation is very limited.

I already tried the examples from the MMF2 CD. The example "Pathfinding_tutorial.mfa" would be perfect for my case, but I would need much bigger Virtual playground (Virtual Width: 2000, Virtual Height: 1600) and the cell size of 4pix. I tried to adapt the example for my needs, but it didn't work. Looks like I don't understand how the extension works after all :-)

Are there any good tutorials how to use "Path Find" extension?
Or even better: I would really appreciate if someone experienced with "Path Find" will be willing to help me with advices!
And last- based on your experience- is this extension stable and reliable enough for serious use (I heard that some extensions could cause the instability)?
Is this extension compatible with SWF exporter?

Thank you very much in advance!!! :-)

P.S. I also made some tests with "Advanced Path Movement". Which could also be great for my needs. But the manual set up of the paths in "Event Editor" is very confusing and time consuming. The "Point maker.exe" is great, but again- it's limited to the size of 800x600pix, and the size of my playground is bigger. Is there any workaround hot to use "Point maker" with bigger gameplay area?

I am not experienced with pathfinding object but I found this example by Andos here.
The "Advanced Path Movement" extension is compatible with SWF exporter.

Re: "Path Find" & "Advanced Path Movement" extensions

    Thank you Hristos!
Call me stupid, but this example made me even more confused :-)

Anybody? A tutorial, or documentation? I'm a little desperate (I'm working on an educational game and I have a tight deadline :-( )

As I said- if someone understand how the "Pathfinding_tutorial.mfa" works, then he could probably adapt the application to work with new dimensions in a couple of minutes.

P.S. "Advanded Path Finding" extension is better documented, but unfortunately it looks very complex and complicated. The simple Pathfinding object seems much simpler and a little bit more manageable.

    1. Set the size of the map (is 2000x1600 the size in pixels, so the map acutally is 500x400 positions? If so set the size to 500x400)

    2. Set the obstacles within the 500x400 sized map.

    3. Set start and end position and the find path.

One thing is that if the start/end/obstacle position is at pixel (1516, 1236) the actual position in the map is (1516, 1236)/4 = (379, 309) (size of each square position).

Re: "Path Find" & "Advanced Path Movement" extensions

Personally I would use advanced pathfinding object as the pathfind extension is pretty basic and if I remember it only works for one path so you cannot control multiple objects without storing in arrays etc, which the APF does.

But if you are moving only 1 object it would probably do the job fine.

Re: "Path Find" & "Advanced Path Movement" extensions

Bigredron: Advanced Path Find object looks very complex and complicated to use. I'm on very tight deadline (I need to make 5 games in a month) so I don't have a week to study how it works. Plus when I tested APF with demo applications I collided couple of times into the situation where the character was caught in a wall and couldn't move anywhere. I didn't have such problem with simple Path Find Object so far.
In a mean time I made a decent progress with the basic Path Find Object. I still don't understand how it works- but it finally works :-) Thank you all for help.

About moving multiple movements with simple Path Find Object: is it possible to use more than one PF object in a game? One per every character?

Re: "Path Find" & "Advanced Path Movement" extensions

The best thing would be to just use one object and use this strategy:

    1. Find the path for the first character
    2. Use "Save current path to an array"
    3. Do the same for the rest of the characters
    4. Use "Save path->Advance one" to move each character.
