    Hi.

According to the official site, you can't copyright a game title or mechanic.
    http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl108.html

If your game does not use any copyrighted media (graphics & sound) you should do fine. Though I have to say I haven't really dug much into this topic.

We recently had some discussions in the forum:

The title can be trademarked, however. If you avoid the name, graphics and sounds of the original you should be safe, even with the same gameplay.

Hey, I've got a legal question of my own, do any of you guys trademark and sell your games, and if so then 1. How much have you made? 2. How much did it cost to purchase and renew your trademark? 3. What were the legal steps you had to go through to sell your games either online or in the U.S. marketplace?

    Re: legal issues

Even if you legally can make a Tetris clone be warned that you will probably still meet resistance when trying to sell it.

For example Apple has removed all Tetris clones from their app store, even free ones. And the Black Berry app store also only carries the official Tetris.

I suspect you'll have little problems if you sell the game yourself, but just remember that publishers or gamesites might interpret/enforce copyrights differently.

I doubt Nifflas would answer you question 1. I dont think many developers would. he wouldn't even tell me how many copies he sold on steam

    Re: legal issues

If this is the case, then I think that is part of the problem and not a solution. For decades pro developers have balked at revealing anything, instead of sharing information. This was more common in the 70,s and 80's. Too bad this mentality is being carried over into 2010. Things have changed after 40 years.

    Re: legal issues

Just because someone does well using MMF or made a cool game/app it doesn't mean they are then entitled to answer everyone's questions, just my view really but i am guessing if people wanted to answer questions they would.

Knowing that someone has made a game that has sold a lot would have no effect on your sales if you wanted to sell a game also.

    Re: legal issues

Thank you for your comments, even though truthfully it's not my post to begin with. I see all of your points and I know almost all game developers, except perhaps the ones on here, are unwilling to help. I'm am truelly just scaveging the earth looking for either a game developer or a lawyer willing to help me with getting my games out on the market without encountering any legal cases, lawsuits (against others), or people who would steal my game file and sell it themselves.
