Cannot get score to display on another frame

    Hey, all.

I am designing my first game--a pinball game. One issue I am having is that I cannot get the game score to display on another frame (the "game over" frame).

Aside that supposedly Score objects are global, I created a new Global Variable (called "Score"), then assigned score points to it in the same way I was assigning score points to Player 1's score. Then, on the "game over" frame, I tried to acquire the "Score" Global Variable value; despite having an identical Score object on the "game over" frame, the score doesn't carry over from the "pinball table" frame.

I'm sure I must be doing something wrong. Can anyone give me some pointers?

    Thank you very much!

    Most sincerely,

    RGBreality

A score object doesn't display global values. You should set a counter to the Score global value or a string to Str$(Score) to get what you want.

Re: Cannot get score to display on another frame

Thanks for the quick reply, LB!

I'm still having problems, unfortunately. I have set a Counter object on the "game over" frame, and have called it to read the "Score" Global Variable value. In Debug view, I see that the Global Value is being added to (the score).

Yet, the Counter object does not display the "Score" Global Value, either as number graphics or text.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Here's what I'm doing:

On the "Counter" object in the Event Editor, I select "Set Counter," then select "Retrieve Data from an Object," and finally select "Retrieve Data from a Global Value" (and select the "Score" variable).

Should I be doing this differently?

    Thank you again!

No, you are doing it correctly. What are the conditions of that event? Maybe it isn't firing the event at the correct time?

Re: Cannot get score to display on another frame

    A few suggestions:
    • Try renaming the score variable to something like "PlayerScore". Calling it score could possibly mess up MMF.
    • When you get to your game over frame, check that the score variable is still what it was before. If it resets to 0 or something, you probably have an event resetting it.
    • Maybe use the built-in score system if you don't end up fixing the problem. It's global itself and all you need to do is add a Score Object to a frame.

I hope that helps, and good luck on your first game.

If calling it Score messes up MMF2, then he would have gotten a message saying he could not call it score.

It could be a bug in MMF2.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks!

If I were to use the built-in scoring system for MMF2, how would I set that up?

Re: Cannot get score to display on another frame

Ah, I found out what the problem was...

I had a Question/Answer text object in the Game Over frame (asking if the player wanted to play again). It seems that other text objects (including other text, counters, or scores) cannot be displayed on the same frame as a Question/Answer text object.

Thanks again for all your feedback and help!

Re: Cannot get score to display on another frame

As far as the conditions, did you try "always",
set Global Value A to = Player score.

and on the next frame- Set counter = global Value A

That would work. but if your counter doesn't show up at all, I would check to see what is wrong with that.
