    Request : Character Image update

    Character Image is really a great extension.
    Sadly it supports only basic ascii so you can use it only with english language. I tried various tricks to use accentuated letters but all failed.

    That would be great if it could support unicode or at least custom charmaps as TextBlitter does.

    Any update expected in that direction ?

    So in other words, the point of the extension was to give exclusive features to Developer users while excluding Standard users? I'm not saying that as a negative, I just want to know if that was the reason why the extension was developed, because that is what you're implying. Personally, I'd love this functionality to be available for Standard users, because the Text Blitter is extremely limited and buggy to the point of being broken in its current state.

    Now, back on topic: this is highly unlikely with MMF2 currently. Although MMF2 can display Unicode text just fine under certain circumstances (I've successfully displayed Unicode using the basic String object, even changing the text in runtime at the Event Editor), for some reason, this doesn't apply to any of the extensions, the Text Blitter family in particular.

    Yes. It is an incentive to get Developer.

    The text blitter is not buggy at all. You have to know how it works, though. I've been using it since it came out (even before that) and I'm absolutely delighted with it I haven't found an efficient use for the Character Image Object yet--go figure. But to each his or her own, yes.

    The main advantages of the Character Image are variable font width (though textblitter can do this with some hackery) and alpha channel support.

    Actually, every time I try to use Text Blitter with black text, it insists on making the text transparent. Even if I turn off the "use transparent color" feature or change the color.

    StephenL, thanks for your honesty. Truth be told, I do want to get Developer anyway, and it looks like this is another benefit. Still, it will be a month or so at least before I can buy it.

    Netninja, any chance that you can share how to do this hackery? I know Podunkian did an article a long time ago, but I don't think it's anywhere to be found nowadays.

    Text Blitter has that too. :P
    The main advantage of Character Image is that each character is a single bitmap and you can have multiple fonts and dynamic text alignment.

    True Black (0,0,0) in most places is transparent no matter what (how annoying). To get around it and also keep support for smaller color ranges, you need to use either (8,0,0), (0,8,0), or (0,0,8).
