Did this fix the problem? if not, try moving the counter to the front. you can either do that by right clicking the counter and looking for move to front(may be lying to you, havent used mmf2 in a little bit so im out of practice lol), or you could try using layers (ctrl+k) and move it to the front that way.

Is the counter setup as a Bar?

If so then you must adjust the min and max range to display a properly scaled counter. By default the min is -999999999 and the max is 999999999. If your alternate value maxs at 100 then the bar would show nothing.
