Patch Maker - Preparing original file

I'm about to send off my program, and know that patches will need to be made for it in the future.

Knowing this, is there anything I should do in the original release to make patching easier when the time comes?

Hmm... first you should store the install path to a registry key, so that the patch program can find it easily.

And maybe do a test? Create a fake update, create a patch for it and test it.

Also, if you plan to release lots of patches, the size of the patch program will grow as each patch will have to be able to patch all the previous versions. If your program is on a CD-ROM you could do what we do ourselves with the patches of MMF2 : the original files are on the CD-ROM in a separate directory and in our patches we have selected the "If unknown version / ask for source directory" option for all the files. Thanks to this option all our patches are built only from the original version and not all the directories of the intermediate versions. For example the patch of the build 250 will be made between the directory of the build 250 and the directory of the build 239 (instead of the directory of the build 250 and the directories of the builds 239, 240, 241, 242, 243, ... 249).

That's awesome information. Most of my patches will be to include new files (ini renamed to .dat files for new languages).

I'm afraid to touch people's registries. But I might take a look into it.

    Thanks Yves.

The registry is very easy to use. Parameters to store/retrieve your install pathname in the Options tab :

    Root key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Key : Software\YourCompany\YourProduct
    Sub-key : InstallPath

    and check the "Update key".

Also, in the Registry sub-tab of the Uninstaller tab, add :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\YourCompany\YourProduc t

    as key to delete.

Of course replace YourCompany and YourProduct. :p

    That's all.
