LoZ Ocarina of Time/ Twilight Princess like Start

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nGl1G1Hvhs

Ok so you see before/during the time the title is coming up, there is a scene playing in the background?

I wish to do something along the lines of that.

I havent really given it to much thought at all, but would it be as simple as having a video play in the background and then have my stuff come in when i want?

That video actually takes place inside the OOT 3d engine- its not prerendered video. Its just like all the other nintendo cutscenes. So the engine (which is a modified version of the Super Mario 64 engine) plays the scripted sequence of camera angles and events, with the logo and menu overlaid on top of it.

    Ok.

Suppose one would want to do something along the lines of that (however simple it may be, most likely 2D) How would one start off?

Well if you had an engine that your game operates in, you'd just script it. If you are just using MMF2 primitives, you just construct the scene by using things like path movements and timer events (or using counters that tick up).

It seems MMF actually has inbuilt functions for this:

    (Look for "Demo" in Help.)

I guess the recorded demo should be put in a subapp and overlaid with the buttons you want to put on top of it. Haven't tried it myself.

I've tried this recently, on two of my machines, and it crashes MMF each time. Has anyone else had luck with it?

It works without any issues what-so-ever for me. It even worked on my old XP with memory corruption problems - practically everything had a 90% crash rate, just not the demo recording

The demo recording wouldn't ever reproduce an exact same replica for me, and I did try playing around with the random generator seed. What I've done is to code every control-input event and then duplicate it and modify it for when I need an auto-movement routine, which allows to control each aspect of the engine (as if it were the player) through a scripted countdown.

You set the random seed to, say, 1337, then record it. Then, before you play back the demo, you need to seed the random generator to the same seed 1337, then immediately play the demo - anything inbetween *may* affect the random generator and offset it a bit. You need to make sure the circumstances of recording are the same for playing, as well. The demo recording only records key presses.
