It would be helpful if you posted your working mfa file.
I made a simple "game" where one active object shoots different and I gave the first one 8 directions movement. It works.
Post your application or an example and we'll tell you what did you do wrong.

Well I can shoot if any button is, or any buttons are pressed with spacebar.
i have the vista 64 bit os.
it works if i switch the shoot key to "ctrl" but i want it to be the space bar.
Also, try using a different key to shoot.
The problem may be caused by "phantom key blocking", where your keyboard won't register certain combinations of keys being pressed simultaneously (these vary from one keyboard to the next).
EDIT: Okay, just read your last post. Sounds like it could well be the problem I talked about above, in which case there's absolutely nothing you can do about it, besides buying a new keyboard.
