Seek failed - File greater than 2gb...

    Hi,

Just a note that I recently discovered a setup failing that is over 2GB. Our products are getting larger and larger, may be over 2GB.

I just wanted to mention that I wish you could figure a way to have files larger than 2GB, even if there are data files.

I have to look for another setup tool now, and I was very accustomed to Install Creator. Maybe another compression type, or you simply reinitialize the compression engine for the 2nd data file.

IC3 will work with files larger than 2GB, I believe.

If your installer is for example on a DVD you might be able to get around this problem by configuring Install Creator to store the file(s) externally.

Re: Seek failed - File greater than 2gb...

Unfortunately, it is a download product, and everything has to be contained.

We were able to find another solution... but it would be good to use Install Creator all the time.

I think it is only a compression issue. If you reinitialize the compression at a certain point, or use a different type of compression that does not have the 2GB limit, then it could work. Programs and data files are getting so big these days... 2GB is a lot more common these days.

Thanks for the reply though! And maybe IC3 will already do the above when it comes out!

Re: Seek failed - File greater than 2gb...

    2 gigabytes = 2,147,483,648 bytes
    2 ^ 32 = 4,294,967,296

Signed 32-bit Integer Range is from -2147483648 to 2147483647
Unsigned 32-bit Integer Range is from 0 to 4294967296

Unless I am mistaken I think it has something to do with signed longs vs unsigned longs. Now, seeing as the error is "Seek failed", I don't that this is directly related to the compression algorithm - seeking is related to streams, and most likely in this case, file streams, IC is getting to a point where it needs to seek to a position past position 2147483647, and since that is the highest value for a signed long, it becomes a negative number from -2147483648 to -1, which of course doesn't make sense as a position to seek to in a file, which is probably why the seek is failing. I don't know if there is much Clickteam can do about this because it is most likely a windows function or similar that uses signed longs instead of unsigned longs. I think that they have come up with a work around for IC3 that cannot be adapted for IC2.

Unless I'm wrong about the seek failing error, that is. I probably am, but I still may have been close to the truth in one way or another.
