Would it be possible, using an embedded SWF file for a preloader, to have something in the preloader be clickable (i.e. for the sponsor logo to lead to the sponsor's homepage)? Or will the embedded preloaders still not recognize any mouse input?

Yes. Once you embed the swf in your application, you can scale, size, show/hide or whatever.
It should be finalized today.
