How to get a list of all computers on a LAN?

    Hey, folks.

Is there a way I can get a list of all computers on a LAN, then populate that list into a combo box?

I am in the process of creating a dialog box which tests database connectivity to a SQL Server. I have successfully created this dialog box to connect to a local database, but now I need to be able to connect to a remote database.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

    Hey RGBreality.

    Your application sounds very interesting,

As for LAN lists; this example might shine light

    Good luck

I added this to my to-do list for OS Control, also.

Re: How to get a list of all computers on a LAN?

Hey, guys. Thanks for the input! By the way, I would be glad to show a demo of this application once it has matured.

The goal of this application is to determine hardware and software prerequisites on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems for my company's software product. Our product is a modular suite. This tool tests whether the local computer meets our product's minimum prerequisites, then offers both an on-screen and softcopy report how the local computer may fail in those requirements.

One requirement is that the local computer can make a database application connection test to either SQL Server or Oracle. I have been able to get the SQL Server side completed, since MMF2 comes with a robust SQL Server object.

What I am presently stuck on is how to make an Oracle database connection. I am fiddling with the ODBC object, but it doesn't seem to be working for me. Any ideas how an Oracle database connection might be achieved?

Thanks again for the input! I very much appreciate it!

Perhaps Byo could make an Oracle DB Connection extension as he could probably re-use his code for the MS Sql object.

Re: How to get a list of all computers on a LAN?

    Hey, Seele! How ya doin'?...

No, I'm afraid I haven't been able to get an Oracle connection established. I have a dialog box which will capture user input, but I don't know yet how to use this information to connect to an Oracle 10g server.

I have found a Web site which offers connection strings. They offer a number of Oracle connection strings (http://www.connectionstrings.com/oracle), but I am unclear how to use them within MMF2. I have tried using the ODBC object to make a connection, but I may not be using the ODBC object properly; at run-time, the ODBC object asks for the DNS string (as if the object was just placed into an MMF2 project).

There is a connection string for Microsoft OLE DB and .NET Framework, but I'm unclear how I would utilize those in MMF2.

So, at the moment, I'm still stuck...

I wonder if it's easier to connect to an Oracle 10g database using OLE DB?

    Very well thanks,

If this Microsoft OLE DB could could be realized using Visual Basic scripts you would be able to access it using the same method i used in my example to communicate with it from MMF.

Also there is the .Net object which can do anything; but finding someone who'll show you how is the challenge.

( it would require the likes of Yves or > )
