Eight Direction Animation?

Ok heres the deal. In the active objects animation i have the walking animation for up down left and right. When I go in the event editor to set it up I make repeat while right arrow is pressed and a negated repeat while right arrow is pressed. in the first event i put in change animation sequence to walking, then i hit change direction of animation (right) and then hit change direction (right). test it and everything is working and the animation is playing correctly. now when i do the exact same thing for the left arrow, i test it and the animation doesnt play at all... i dont know what is going on can anyone help?

should be;
for right, repeat while right is pressed +(optional) negated repeat while left is pressed - set direction -> (0), change animation to walking
for left, repeat while left is pressed +(optional) negated repeat while right is pressed - set direction <- (16), change animation to walking
for none, negated repeat while left is pressed + negated repeat when right is pressed - change animation to stopped.
for both, repeat while right is pressed + repeat while left is pressed - change animation to stopped.
