Use the AVI object to play a video.
Java : applications like an exe, double click on them to launch them
Java Web Start : from your browser, the application will be automatically loaded and lanched

We had a talk about this in our Java class at college a couple of weeks back. My lecturer, Joe, said that because Java is a sandbox application deployment platform that can be deployed over the internet that he doesn't see its future ending anytime soon but it is interesting that (recently at least) Java programs don't run on Windows 8. Even if you install the Java runtime on Windows 8 and then launch a Java program, it won't run. Either Microsoft or Oracle (Java's current owners) need to address this but there are rumours going around that because Windows 8 has it's own App environment, Microsoft are pushing that platform over Java.

Wow. This ruins a lot of Java games and applications and I think it is a sad state of things.

Not really since most people will keep their current computers and still be able to play those games.

Plus I very much doubt Microsoft will just block out a huge game/app network like that. It's not a direct rival.

Windows 8 for x86 and x64 will support Java (Windows 8 Consumer Preview, i.e. the beta release, does run Java), but not the ARM version for tablets (Windows RT I believe that will be called).

I've had no problems running jAMOS on the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. I wrote that in 100% Java.

Google and Oracle seem to be at war right now over android which could effect things slightly but java is not going away any time soon however. If Microsoft blocked java use though they would be real idiots, blocking flash didn't work for iOS and instead it just helped every other company selling tablet devices with flash support as it was something many people wanted.

I hadn't heard about that. I wish companies would quit peeing on each other.
