Question Wide playfield only scrolling for a short amount in SWF

    Hi there,

Bit of a strange problem here. I'm making a side-scrolling platformer with a wide playfield. When running a normal build, it performs fine, scrolling along with the characters without a hitch.

When playing it as a SWF, however, it decides to stop scrolling after a few thousand pixels — acting as if it had reached the right edge of the play area, which really shouldn't be the case.

Even stranger is that is wasn't doing this a few hours ago, but I can't for the life of me work out what might have changed to cause this error.

I've attached my mfa — if anyone can be of assistance, that'd be fantastic!

I've worked out a way you can make it scroll past that point but noticed now it doesn't make chunks beyond that point.

Here is the following I done:

(EVERY 1 SECOND) *Doesn't need to be every second, the event that trigger's it could be anything.
    *STORYBOARD CONTROLS*
    Set Virtual Width = VirtualWidth+640

Whether it's the best option, I don't know.
Using something like the above would in a sense increase the level size on the fly as the player goes along.

Perhaps there is something in the chunk generation code stopping it from creating past that point, I had a problem like it before and was very frustrating to say the least as I never solved what caused it.

    Perhaps a memory issue?

BTW I'm no expert but thought I'd give it a look.

    EDIT:

I went back to look and you object limit is only 500, increase that and remove objects that aren't needed anymore. That is one thing you could try.

Thanks for the reply leighton —*the problem went away for a bit after I made different level chunks, but now it's returned, now that I've added *more* level chunks. Very weird.

I've since increased the object limit and it still happens. Will try constantly altering the virtual width like you mention!

Nope, still the same for me. And another strange thing: the keyboard commands seem to stop working once it hits, as do a bunch of other events. My goodness this is frustrating.

Can you check that you do not center the position of the frame (to create the scrolling) TWICE in your game loop? Flash does not like that at all..

Just checked, and I only have one instance of Always --> Center Display at 0,0 from <Scrolling Active>

I don't know if this helps or not, but here's what I've figured out so far:

I make my level chunks in a separate MMF application. When launched, the positions of all objects are recorded and exported to a txt file.

I then drop that data into a List object in the Chase mfa, and the game generates those level chunks one at a time just ahead of the positions of the characters.

Right now I've got four different level chunks. Two of them run just fine in Flash, but the other two cause the no-scrolling problem to occur. I've been unable to figure out why, though — it all runs fine within MMF itself.
