    About Windows Phone development...

    Hi all,

Finally thinking of having a go at porting my games to Windows Phone.

Is the exporter currently compatible with the Windows 8 phones? I think I read somewhere that the windows 7 apps would work on WP8, but I'd like some confirmation on this...

And could someone recommend a cheap WP for development? None of the features matter, I just need an 'average' spec device to test with...

I think Windows Phone 8 still supports XNA, but some key functionality (even in-app purchases?) on WP8 can't be used with XNA. But someone wiser than me would have to confirm..

Regarding cheap Windows Phones... depends if you want a 7.5 device or wait for WP8. Some 7.5 devices are heavily discounted right know - from those I could recommend Nokia Lumia 710 for a tighter budget.

Thanks I've found a few articles echoing that XNA apps will run, but they can't use 'WP8 features' whatever they are...

Cole, you do know that your license is now Xbox 360 only? You will have to apply again to Microsoft for another license to develop for Windows Phone...

Yeah there was a huge uproar at the XBLIG forums over it. So I emailed Microsoft asking them for the low-down and that was the general answer. It's either/or now.

I'm extremely angry at their XBLIG service right now. On the verge of cancelling my XBLIG account and even demanding my registration fee back.

I've just found out that my request for an ITIN was denied by the IRS because the letter that microsoft provide wasn't worded correctly.

They won't update it. Nobody has had any luck contacting their 1 support email address.

It basically looks like they've all but abandoned the service, apart from the bit where people pay them money to be part of it.

They are not providing what we need in order for us to get paid properly. It would be outrageous if it were a free service, but it's one we pay $99/year for! I can't imagine this is even legal?!

It's such a shame because it could be a great platform, and the work Clickteam have put into the exporter is superb. It's just Microsoft couldn't care less about the Xbox side of it.

There's a good chance I'll take my earnings with 30% withheld by the IRS for no good reason, and cancel my membership. Which is a huge shame because Planet Wars is basically ready to be released. But if they're not going to pay me properly, what's the point? Would I ever see the money I make from that?!

Microsoft at least support the Windows Phone side of things. But the experience of XBLIG has made me very cautious about self publishing with Microsoft.

Cole, I concur. There is only one person left on the XBLIG development team and it took him a full 9 weeks to fix up a simple issue of 'prepaid codes' on the website, there was around 40 developers who all emailed Microsoft using the creators@ email and one of the staff replied there was only one person on the team and XBLIG is set to lowest priority from his normal role anyway. It seems to me and plenty of others that they have abandoned XBLIG for Windows Phone priority which is now a separate entity at Microsoft.

What a shame it's really cool being able to play MMF games on the xbox.

I hear ya Cole. I don't think I want to continue to pursue XBLIG either. I was already unsure but your post has helped. The section is hidden in a corner like it's an embarrassment to them, they treat us like crap, and our games would be associated with the terrible amateur stuff which is on there. The PS Vita exporter might be a better option for indie on games consoles, but for now I'm sticking to mobile and PC.
