Video game tiles: how big is too big?

    Hi
When creating the backdrop tiles for a platform game how big can you make them before it begins to have an effect on how your game runs?
& Is it better to have a large variety of small tiles than a smaller variety of large tiles?

    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

I have noticed over the years, on the forum, that this has been debated over and over, and I still don't know. In my tests it hasn't made much of a difference. I use smaller graphics. To be safe use HWA.

With backdrops it doesn't matter. They're all melded together into a single image at start of frame.
