Steamworks - Force open through steam

I've been greenlit and recently started testing on steam.

Is there any way (or is it being made) to force the game/application to be run through steam? At the moment you can just copy the .exe from the "SteamApps" folder and give to others. It runs without the need of steam being installed or anything.
Checking if the steam account owns the game only works when in online-mode..

How do you avoid super easy piracy like this?

PlasmaVoid, would you recommend that to anybody with a game on Steam? Mines out next week but now I'm scared of pirates haha.

Don't be too scared of pirates Del!

Be proud you got something good enough to steal, but I think that check will help you out a bit.

Id recommend using this check to display a popup letting the player know it failed to authenticate with steam before ending the app. Id also recommend checking to see if the steam account running the game actually owns it as well.

    LOL, thanks Jeff!

Actually I tried that check and though it worked when I tried to play the game offline it also worked while I was connected to Steam and ended the application (whoops!)

I just had that one check at the very start of the very first frame. Are you sure it shouldn't be "is not connected" rather than "fails to connect"?
Of course I could be doing it wrong but I don't believe so.

It depends on what youre going to do when they fail to connect. "Is not connected" will run the actions every frame for as long as you are disconnected from steam. "fails to connect" will only run the actions once when you fail to connect(similar to: limit conditions: one action when event loops."

I just put it once at the very top of the very first frame (on start of frame condition) and it ended the application when I was both connected and not connected to steam. I'll try it once more but if it doesn't work again I gotta' nix the idea.
