Can't go fullscreen if game resolution is bigger than screen resolution?

Say you are developing in 1920x1080 resolution. A player with laptop that has 1600x900 resolution attempts to play your game, it won't work.

I need real fullscreen and not windowed fullscreen because the performance difference can, and in my case, is huge.

    Am I missing something here?
I'm trying to trigger my 1080p app with 4:3 monitor that supports max 1280x1024. I've tried playing around with aspect ratio settings etc. Can't get it to work, and suggestions?

EDIT: Solved, select "Resize display to fill window size" and then use shaders to keep the aspect ratio. Thanks to Crache!

Any chance you can share the method using shaders? I'm interested to know as my game is developed at 1920x1080 as well.

Okay this was not my idea, but Crache's, he has been very helpful!

Untick "Keep screen ratio" and tick "Resize display to fill window size". This way it goes to real fullscreen, however your aspect ratio is not correct.
You can get a vertex shader: http://community.clickteam.com/threads/84448-Vertex-Shader-Experiments-without-extensions-Historical-moment-in-CF-2-5! and use it's parameters to correct the ratio. I have not played around it with much yet, but it seemed pretty easy. I think you could apply shader to your frame, or layers.

    Cheers!
