raster / per-line parallax scrolling effect

i'm interested in finding out if there's a way to scroll individual lines at different speeds. like say i wanted to scroll the 3rd pixel on the Y axis at 1.0, the 4th pixel at 2.0, etc. the "obvious solution" is to use layers, but i'm not exacty keen on making 300+ layers. the perspective object isn't what i have in mind either. is there any way to achieve this effect at all? the "raster" method of parallaxing, basically.

You mean like the water in Green Hill zone in Sonic? You can try using actives and adjust the speed of the animation during runtime.

yeah, exactly like that. is actives really the best solution? hundreds / thousands of actives all over a frame doesn't seem like a very elegant solution.

Maybe using "surface object" by altering its RGB values,
constantly updating a "trailing" X pattern at different Y values?

Just an idea to test, don't know about actual speed performance

solution found! by using looki's background offset shader and a graphic like this:

    Untitled-2.png

we can offset the background in chunks easily. i've included a sample. it's simple and effective!

Did you try the parallaxer object yet? Never tried the shader way but had the best results with the parallaxer so far.
