    You could also make up some fake entries so that if a user modifys the ini then it would "currupt" it if it detected changes. Also make it not so easy for someone to know exactly what to modify ie

    Level1=1
    Level2=0
    Level3=0

    To me that means, if Level 1 was completed then you should just need to change Level 2 to 1. Maybe make this a number that people would be able to randomly guess? ie Level2=450 or even tetyUyy=2 instead of Having Level2 in plain sight.

    Also maybe throughout the game, make the Ini write a value so that it checks this first and if anything else has been changed then it knows someone has been messing with it.

    Ie

    Value=G

    Level1=1
    Level2=1
    Level3=1

    Check if Level3=1 and Value=G then this is legit. If the Value is something else and Level3=1 then it's been edited.

    Just some ideas anyway.

    AESFusion is an encryption extension that is available across all platforms. You can use this with INI which is also cross-platform.

    didn't know about it
    not completely "full" cross platform though:

    Win, Flash, Android, HTML5

    anyway, more than enough for me

    My opinion:

    Hiding it and placing it in a random location isn't really friendly to the users computer.
    You are really much better off encrypting it or storing the data online.

    I really like it when a developer keeps all the applications files in one folder (and sub folders of that)

    I agree with you Jeff, moving it and renaming it is inelegant and messy. pretty much a waste of time. The game i'm needing this for uses an older version of Multimedia fusion, (I can't use an upgraded version because many extensions were not ported), so my options are limited, I don't think Aesfusion is compatible. There's an extension I have called save game extension coded in 2002 I think, does anyone know if this encrypts ini files automatically if it saves to them?

    The Blowfish Object also ecrypts, and can 'easily' encrypt/ decrypt an entire INI file ( i tested yesterday )
    If have this Object at your availability you should be fine

    If you have no encryption available, you can also use a checksum system - whenever you save values in the INI, update another INI field with the result of a calculation on the fields that are in it. When the game is loaded, check the values against the checksum by applying the same formula - if the values don't match, you know that the file has been modified outside the game.

    Apples = 6
    Bananas = 7
    Carrots = 4
    Checksum = 607040

    Here, the checksum is (carrots*10) + (bananas*1000) + (apples*100000)... obviously you'd want to make it a bit more complicated than that so that the player couldn't easily work out the formula used to generate the checksum.

    Yeah you should try the Blowfish object, that's what I'm using as well.

    You choose whatever encryption key you want, then right before going to save the file you decrypt the ini (then save) then encrypt the ini right afterwards.
    For loading the file, do the same thing.

    I only just recently added the encryption to the game though, as I find being able to edit the ini saves to be very helpful to debug or balance things out gameplay-wise.

    Thanks alot guys, I'll try using the blowfish extension. Does anyone know about the save game extension? Anyone use it, or does it have some issues?
