What's the best way to make a smooth frame transition with a black flash effect?

Can you give an example of what you're looking for? My first thought would be to have an entirely black object covering the screen at frame start, then deleting it after a couple of cycles.

There's already built in transitions between frames. There's definitely a fade to black effect in there as well. If you want more customization, you can use your own black active that covers the viewing frame and change the semi-transparency over time.

Thanks for your responses. The built in transition offers the necessary features for my purpose. It has a fading effect, so you can easily fade out a frame and fade in the next frame.
Thanks for that forum post Ped. I will use this way if it helps out the performance.

That is chompy and looks ugly. You're better off using your own object using the Alpha Coefficient.
