Question Storing Assets in an external file (dat)

So here's something I've never bothered to try; How does one go about storing assets in an external file? I've seen plenty of 'made with fusion' games doing it and I suspect it's a better approach than just slamming everything into the exe file and choking the application when things get complicated. But I have no idea how to actually externalize things with Fusion. Everything else I use just does it automatically. Can someone tell me where to start?

I'm unsure whether you're on about just a way to store sprites (in spritesheets?) but, I do this quite often with both games and desktop applications.

Everyone will have their own take on how they approach it but here is mine:

    - Pack all the data into a directory-packed file (Directory Packer)
    - Zip up the data file

When a user installs your game/app, be sure to create a dedicated folder inside their APPDATA directory (local\roaming), then unzip, then unpack to that directory. You can choose to delete these files when the app is closed, or keep them there for faster launches next time.

The final (dat) file, can either be stored as mystuff.dat on its own, or you could append it to the end of the executable using Binary. This way it would be hidden and extracted at runtime.
