if you're an absolute beginner, forget 3d mmo trading card game...

just create simple games to know the work around of cf2.5

online stuff is commonly utilizing the Lacewing object, but if you're a beginner, stay away from lacewing at first, it would overwhelm you as well as any 3d or mmo stuff, that's not easy to make.
just get a hang of Fusion for now, . . if you really want a card game, maybe practice creating a single player card battle when you're good at using Fusion....
if you can create a good single player card game, then you can start transitioning to online game.

Start with something simple as Blackjack. Add your own rules maybe?
This will introduce you to a basic card deck and also let you play around/ experiment with 3d effects ( like fake 3D effects like flipping cards and virtual distance from table etc ) or whatever you want to explore.

Im not discuraging you from doing the online trading thing, but for a first project its hard to imagine something like this seing daylight.

FYI, if you already have a basic understanding of CF2.5, these video tutorials can help with learning the basics of making online multplayer games: http://community.clickteam.com/threads/58247-Lacewing-Video-Tutorials

However, before you do that you need to make sure you know how to make basic games in CF2.5, because otherwise, it's not going to make much sense. Also, don't expect to be able to make a MMO with this knowledge. It SHOULD be enough for a more basic game (e.g. one where you aren't as concerned with cheating, with player's progress stored locally, and one where battling friends and such is a bigger focus to make cheating less of a problem), though, which from the sounds of things might be enough for you.

(P.S. There is one more thing to note about those video tutorials: You need to make sure to check the "global" checkbox under Lacewing's properties in every frame in the template MFA files, since otherwise, it won't work quite right.)

EDIT: As for 3D, well, if you know how to make pre-rendered 3D animations, then those are probably easy enough to implement, and since you're talking about a trading card game, well, that should be enough probably.

Well, that's probably quite a bit simpler than a 3D one, even with the multiplayer in mind. Might be a good decision.
