    Sine wave distortion effect for the background possible?

    Is it possible to do a sine wave distortion effect for the background, but not a very resource-hungry one and working with Android?

    It don't have to look like that but something similar - it could be very rough too.

    You'd probably do it with shaders, but my understanding is that custom shaders don't work on Android (if I'm wrong someone please correct me, but they haven't worked for me)...

    Yes, you are right. That's why I'm asking here - perhaps there is a shader-less solution using math functions or something like that.
    In the Zelda game they achieved this effect just with coding I guess.

    Shader is the only way. Gameboy (and other consoles) allowed coders to access the graphics renderer directly. We don't have the same luxury, unfortunately.

    Word is that anything you can do in one runtime you can do in all of them. So that would include shaders.
