Unhappy I can't display objects in front of sub-applications?

I'm just learning CF2.5, and I'm working on a little D&D character health tracker app to get my bearings.
Right now I have a sub-app that I load an instance of for each character. I thought I'd throw a button on top of each to close it, but I can't get the button to appear? I'm assuming it's behind the sub-app, but I've specifically placed it a layer above.

Can you just not place things on top of sub-apps? Is there a better way of doing this than using sub-apps?

The sub-app is loading a different frame from the application to appear in your game frame? Add the button on your sub-app frame. When you click it, set a global string or value to something. Global strings and values retain their information across frames. Then on your game frame test and compare the global string or value to see if it equals your close button action. If it does, then you close the sub-app.

Subapps will always appear on top of the frame they were created from. It is a Windows rule, I believe,

Yeah, I figured the best fix would be to build the button into the sub-app. Thanks for the help y'all.
