Are you allowed to use the libraries for commercial games/applications?

Welcome to our brand new Clickteam Community Hub! We hope you will enjoy using the new features, which we will be further expanding in the coming months.

A few features including Passport are unavailable initially whilst we monitor stability of the new platform, we hope to bring these online very soon. Small issues will crop up following the import from our old system, including some message formatting, translation accuracy and other things.

Thank you for your patience whilst we've worked on this and we look forward to more exciting community developments soon!

  • Am I allowed to use the graphics and/or sounds libraries for commercial games/applications? I would really like to know.

My Please login to see this link. (which I actually use), my Please login to see this link. (which I mostly don't use), and my Please login to see this link. (which I don't use anymore pretty much at all really). If there are awards for "'highest number of long forum posts", then I'd have probably won at least 1 by now. XD

  • Ok. Thanks!

  • Yes, but no-one will buy it if you do.
Apart from the fact that they're not very good, they're also really inconsistent in terms of style - which looks bad, and makes it obvious that they're not your own graphics, so you'll look like a lazy noob.

  • First, the forum members indicate that MMF is not very well known to the world. Then, the forum members indicate that MMF is so well known that the whole world will know if you use the free graphics, that the Clickteam worked so hard on to give us, and won't buy your game. Which is it?

So I must say ba humbug. Anyone wanting to use the graphics available for you, go for it.

  • Agree with Marv
I dont think the libraries are bad at all, the Sound and music Libraries have tons of good stuff to choose from.
Although its true there are alot of different styles in the Graphic Libraries, there are also many sets wich go well together and also many Items wich look good alone.
If you need a funky tune, a sound, a tile or an explosion and you find something that fits your case, then why not use it.
If it looks good and consistent, nobody will complain you didnt make it.

And also, im just wondering if its OK to slightly 'edit' or 'modify' the graphics and animations in the Libraries, like using Photoshop to recolor or edit it in any way?

How can i change username and display name?

  • None of the sets contain enough graphics to make a full game out of, so you'll have to mix & match stuff from different sets and/or your own work (either that, or design your whole game around what few graphics you do have, which would be a pretty big compromise).
Even to someone who's never seen MMF2, that's still a dead giveaway that they're taken from a library or ripped from another game or something. It shows a general lack of creativity / effort which people would assume is likely to be equally evident throughout - including in the gameplay.
And even your graphics aren't that good, if you made them yourself that at least shows that you put a little effort into your game. Plenty of very successful games have bad graphics - far fewer use library graphics.

  • Yeah, and with an arsenal of Sound and graphics at your disposal, youl have more time to do whats most importaint right :)

I almost wana start making a game using only the MMF2 Library Resourcs to see if i can prove the point.

I hate it when people are intolerant of rescource graphics which are obviously there for a reason (to be used), so I say go for it! :)

  • I have to agree with those who discourage doing it. You certainly could build a game with stock assets and release it commercially. Likelihood of being successful doing that? I have to imagine it's pretty close to zero. It has nothing to do with the stock assets not being good. They actually do look pretty good. But your work would not be original. As far as the process of building a game or application goes, yes, coding is the most important part. But when releasing something commercially, what's most important behind the scenes isn't necessarily what's most important for the user. When I play a game I want to play an original game with an original art style and original music. Nearly everyone does. All it would take is one game to get recognition using stock graphics, and then all other developers who tried to do it would be called out for using the same sprites and textures of that other game.

You could, but I wouldn't encourage it if you actually want your game to be played.

  • I was mostly wanting to use the sounds, not the graphics, by the way. Thanks for your help and opinions, everybody! I'll still use the graphics, but I can make graphics (even if I'm kinda third-rate at it), and I was mostly wanting to use the sounds and musics anyway (which I can make, but some sounds (like explosions) are not the kind of thing I can do).

  • I just want to add I don't like using mmf resource graphics as the PLAYER... cause theyre too generic looking... and I prefer the player to be something more memorable like a pokemon, megaman, anime character, etc.
But I really could care less if I used, say, the grassy floor from mmf libraries ("floating island" or something)
As for enemies theyre usually unique... but if I just want say, helicopters or something then I'd take from mmf resources.

  • yeah i know of someone who made a game out of some royalty free graphics. I didnt even know they were royalty free till a later date, but quite a few people turned nasty when they discovered the gfx also appeared in other games (ripping of someones gfx etc) not knowing they were royalty free.

I think for generic graphics it doesnt matter (bullets/grass, weapons perhaps) but characters - you might as well make your own or make them a bit different with photoshop etc

I think sounds are fine to use, most sounds sound all the same really! No one will care on that.

I am okay with using fan sprites in your fan game, even if the fan sprites are made by someone else.

I think some people take their creations TOO seriously... I'm serious about making my creation but not so serious that I am harsh on myself about where the graphics come from.

Yeah, the example i provided was a IOS game (no fan sprites).

But in anycase back in the early click days i used to rip the sprites directly from the snes/megadrive games using the emulators to remove layers etc for my games.

As much as I like fan games, i would prefer to make my own.. even if i dont really have the time to make gfx from scratch really!
