I guess a lot of game devvers think "Hey if we just spawn a load of additive particles all over the place, it will make an amazing explosion!" Whilst in reality they are deluded and it actually looks like an over-saturated orange-yellow blob.

To create an outstanding explosion effect, you really need to study actual footage of explosions.

Lovely! An excellent example for that you don't need a lot of animation to create awesome explosions.

EDIT: Oh and.. here it runs so fast, that I can hardly create two explosions at the same time. Had to lower the fps to see the effect really good.

The kind of explosion i was after was a short sharp bang- the type you get when petrol vapour ignites, but when theres not enough of it to last for more than a few dozen miliseconds.
