Gat an object's alterable value by number

Since we can set an object's alterable by a number instead of a name, why can't I get an alterable value by a number?
It's possible for a global value but not for an object's alterable value <img src="/center/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

If you use the "Compare to one of the alterable values" condition in the object, you can click "Use Expression" to enter the number of the value.

And if that doesn't work, you could set up a List object to index the alterable values by number. But that's just an idea that I haven't tested, and it's half past midnight, so who knows.

My problem is that there's no expression where I can specify the alterable value number and return it's value.
I'd like to do something like:

AlterableValue( "Active1", loopindex("loopname"))
