big images with lots of colours

I was wondering what was more memory efficiant with regards big images and stuff. I've got the impression that for big photo-ish images it's better to have them as seperate files and load them with something like the picture object rather than just paisting them into a backdrop object or something. if this is the case then I was wondering about how many colours an image needs befor it becomes worth it to store it seperately... like how does a couple of hundred sound? many of my backgroundish things are around that mark.

am I compleately waisting my time even thinking about this kinda thing ?

It's always great to keep file size in mind. Not sure about the answer to your question thouhh....depends on a lot of stuff. I suggest you do some tests and see what file (folders end up smaller) Specifically once zipped if you plan on zipping it for people to download.
