How to make a real time audio EQ display?

Chances are everyone will say "ActiveX", but does anyone know of a way to make an Audio Equalizer with real time feed back... I'd like to have it read an audio signal coming in from a line/mic input. The only problem I have is getting the db level from the source. Volume doesn't work... that usually means "what's the volume slider set at".

    thanks.

I don't think that is possible. (Without ActiveX that is.)
