    MMF2 Install and Vista

I just set up Vista and installed from disks. Beware that due to Vistas security (related to admin level access for some programs) you may get messages that certain paths may not be found.

Vista will try to see if the install has gone correctly and suggest you run it with admin level access.

Also, if you download the extension packs you can run into the same problem.

This means that the problem is not with MMF2 but with Vista security measures.

At least this is what I found during my fresh install of Vista and MM2 on Vista.

    Re: MMF2 Install and Vista

    Interesting.

I switched to Vista right when it came out, but after two weeks, got so fed up with it, then I switched back to XP.

Since then, I've basically ignored that Vista exists, since most people I hear from seem to feel the same way.

However, Vista is a reality that we as programmers will have to deal with if we make windows software.
That is, we will have to check that the crazy things that we do, which we used to be able to do in WinXP are still cool to do in Vista.

Writing anything to the root of the C drive is, for example, not gonne work. I mean, this is a terrible idea for a place to store your save-games anyway, but some of my very old games used to do this, so they are no longer playable on Vista.

    Stuff like that...

For this purpose, I intend to run Vista in a virtual machine for trying out my programs in. That way I can test things in Vista without having to actually use Vista at other times.

I believe new PCs are already starting to have Vista pre-installed, so it's inevitable that most of the windows using population will be running Vista sooner, rather than (as I would prefer) later.

So keep this user-group in mind when making your programs! Not to say that I have, but I shall.

    Re: MMF2 Install and Vista

Microsoft in XP let everything run at the admin level unless you changed the account type to "limited". Several programs would run fine in the "limited" mode but even some Microsoft programs would crash if ran in a limited mode account in XP.

So most users just ran in "administrator" mode. Of course this allowed spyware to install without the user being aware and they could freely access system files directly, a big no-no.

Vista, changed this to run programs in limited mode with limited access to the system files. However, some
XP programs and patch programs will also be limited from running or acessing certain file directories. Running in limited mode however has been used in the unix environment for some time. For example, in linux the root account is the all powerful full system access account. Every other account is limited. So if you need certain access linux would allow you or your program to run as a different user or as root.

Windows is implementing this in Vista and going to enforce different layers of security.

One trick most new Vista users are not aware of is that you can select a program (.exe) and set the compatibility properties to also run the program in XP service pack 2, Windows 98 or whatever or in administrator mode. In fact Vista, as I stated before, also tries to help with this if it monitors that a program did not install correctly or a patch program reported errors.

So far I have found the security popup to be a little more of pain but the extra security in my mind is worth it to prevent spyware, or any program for that matter, from installing without you being aware of it.

Also, so far I have not found a XP program that will not run on Vista by using the compatibility trick unless that program tries to access hardware directly.

I agree with your idea of the virtual machine concept. I have not tried that. I know that Microsoft gives their vitual machine software away for free so I will try it.

Current I have two hard drives in my computer. One is for XP and the other is for Vista. I use a dual boot at the present time since if I have Vista booted on the L: drive I can access any data file on the C: drive.

One problem I have noticed with some programs is the graphics of some programs have a problem due to the Vista graphics. I mean that some button or text is missing. Not the case on all programs; but a select few. MMF2 in my case appears white were in menu bar is instead of gray as in XP. I am not sure this is a problem with MMF2 or most likely an issue with the theme Vista is using.

In another thread, we've already been through the Torch carrying up Redwood drive mode.

    Re: MMF2 Install and Vista

gotta love how: linux has a smaller filesize than vista, linux IS better than vista, linux is secure and has a huge freedom of space, vista is trying to be secure, failing and makes it easy for viruses, trojans, etc. and hard for legimate software whereas linux does the opposite

    Re: MMF2 Install and Vista

If Linux had as many users as Windows, Linux would have as many virus as Windows (or more)...

So Vista is not bad for virus and trojan but for the huge configuration which is necessary for use it...
