Replace color and effects on copied objects

Does the replace color action replace the colors for all the objects of the same type? I need a way for similar objects to be differently colored. The way I'm doing it now is I have 2 objects, 1 is a solid color (which the color changes apply to), and the other is an active object that is mostly transparent that has all the shading and highlights and non color changing parts in it (like eye whites and shadows). The problem I'm having is that they all want to be the same color, even though I'm assigning different colors to each.

The replace colour action affects all instances of an object.

You could have 3 objects (one for each colour channel - R,G,B) and use transparency. Or you could have one object and multiple frames of animation.

Well, I'm not going to have unlimited instances of the object (probably about 32 at the max) so I'll just have different object for each color part.

Or, if there was an ink effect for filling in the object with a solid color (but not affecting the alpha channel) that would work.

I remember someone that did a demo in the old forum, where ships had their color changed by overlaying other colored copies with their own ink effects, or somthing like that...

But I would suggest that you give the object extra sets of animations that have the alternate colors. This will save you the process time that is required for realtime color alterations.

The color object itself is animated. The whole point of using the replace color thing was to be able to use every color available, so that's 16516349 different animation frames.

I heard that if you have an object that has the same graphics as another, they are shared, to save disk space. If some objects are sharing the same graphics (but they are not the same object type) will the replace color action make them all the same color? Or will it make them use different graphics and make the file size larger, or what?

For this to work, all I need really is an ink effect that fills in the object with a single solid color, while leaving the alpha values untouched. Can anyone do this for me? (Or is the SDK even out yet?)
