whats the difference between starting an application in mmf2 or a project?

I think a project is just basically like an application folder. Like, if you have a big game or something, you could make different portions of it in different applications, and put them all in one project. I'm using a project for my latest game. Inside the project, I have 3 applications, with the first one having the other two as sub-apps. I think I might make the 3rd application just a different frame in the first app, thus having only 2 apps total, but the 2nd app has more than one frame, so I'm leaving it as a separate application.
