There is however something to explore : the SCUMMVM engine. It is a universal port of lucas point-and-click adventure games engine and that engine runs on basically ANYTHING on earth that has a screen. I would even say that it is much more universal than java and you are not limited to p&click adventures. It is open source and a MMF exporter doesn't seem unrealistic (but well time is the limit).

Actually that sounds highly unrealistic and is FAR from being as universal as java. SCUMMVM is an interpreter for the SCUMM adventure game engine, and only runs supported adventure games.

Nintendo and Sony consoles don't support java while you can play Scummvm games on them so I consider that engine in some way more universal than java (of course it is limited but at least it supports sound, graphics, logical flow, interactivity, collisions, "layers"...).
Furthermore there are tools to make your homebrew games. I just tried a few ago a homebrew game on my linux handheld (that doesn't even have yet java on it) and it runned just fine on it.
I checked the code of the game and it looks a lot the logical flow of MMF (despite there are "else" statements).

Not unrealistic but probably not worth it anyway as limited.

That's not going to happen, but once the java runtime is further developed there's a chance of running that on the DS or PSP. Definitely Mac and Linux, at least.

A homebrew Java K Virtual Machine for the Nintendo DS is being developed, but is still at an early stage. Will it one day be at a stage where it can run MMF2 games, and will they run smoothly? I don't know, but I sure hope so.

It might. We'd probably have to optimize our games for it, but if it is developed enough to the point where it can even display a few sprites, it's gone a long way, and the DS could become a potentially even easier platform.

DS runs at 33Mhz and 66Mhz... MMF2 apps bearly run on 500mhz, plus the java runtime will be 2/3 slower, so your looking at im guessing a few years when no-one will use a DS and when you can have a moving sprite, thats about it, no fancy movements or effects or anything.
The PSP would run faster at 333Mhz if you can unlock it, but it is still slow

Re: MMF created games converted to (e. g.) *.smc

The PSP would run much faster, IMO. With the amount Windows drains your CPU, you may as well say 'MMF2 apps barely run on 250mhz'. My PSP is flashed and I think it'd be pretty awesome if they could get it working. Far faster than mobile phone games.

This Digg post says it's been done for PSP: http://digg.com/gaming_news/Java_Virtual_Machine_ported_to_the_PSP But the page it links to doesn't appear to exist anymore. Sounds good though. Anyone got a better link?
