Optimal fps tips ?

While testing the maximum fps a mmf app could reach I noticed something weird.
The test application is classic : a counter updated every second by an "always" incremented alterable value.

The weird thing is when you fix the fps at 500 in MMF, just see the results (at least on my PIV 2.26Ghz) :
- fps set at 499 => the app runs at 499 fps
- fps set at [color:#CC0000]500 => the app runs at [color:#CC0000]262fps !!
- fps set at 501 => the app runs at 499 fps

Of course it was just for a testing purpose, most lcd screens are around 65hz so no need to go beyond but why does that specific [color:#CC0000]500 fps value blows the framerate ?

If there is a technical reason that implies, for exemple, that a 64 or 66 fps setting is more optimal than a rounded 65 it may be worth knowing it.

you must have a weird visual sync or cpu independant speed.
also, check what timing events you have going, based around the actual time object.

agreed, this must be a local problem. the chance of such an obvious and huge bug going undetected for so long is unrealistic.

btw(epicentre basiclly quoted me(had a few))

Re: Optimal fps tips ?

Weird, it behaves exactly the same on my old PIII under windows 2000 (framerate 499 => counter = 499 || framerate 500 => counter = 260) and it is a matrox card while I use a Nvidia Geforce on my PIV so same problem despite the card, the CPU and the system are different.

BUT it is almost OK on my laptop (Pentium M 2Ghz under XP)! 499=>499 || 500=>485 (slightly less though)

Weird. Not a local bug but not an universal one and I can't see why it occurs on two totaly different configurations and not on the laptop.

Edit : I added my MFA test - testFPS

Re: Optimal fps tips ?

Heh I just tried this out and I too have it drop down to about 260 fps when it's set to exactly 500.

I'm on a Intel C2D 2.16Ghz with XP

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ with Vista

Strangely enough, I really don't get any of these weird framerate occurrences.

You guys are all lying. j/k This is strange though.
