I think libraries are great as well if they come from a reliable source.

What are the best websites to find documentation, include files and libraries for C/C++?

Re: How hard to wrap engines contained in DLLs

This is the book I first learnt from (coming from Javascript/Jamagic/Perl and some Java):

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Standard-C%2B%2B-Bible-Wiley/dp/0764546546/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202051386&sr=1-1

I wrote a review on that page years ago (2002 apparently)
