    Updating without a function cd-drive

Hi, i would love to update my MMF2, but my dvd-drive seems to have given up on me and refuses to read the cd. What do I do?

I don't think there are any options if your CD goes south.
Let me think and look around maybe I can come up with something but perhaps the fastest is to swing by a computer shop or 2nd hand shop and see if you can get a replacement for a couple buck.

Old CD-ROM drives must be a dime a dozen.

They are, but not for laptops =P

anyway, i solved it by mapping the cd-drive of my stationary computer to the laptop over the network.

Still, its kinda annoying to have to carry around the mmf cd to be able to update.. just a small nit pick

You could create an ISO of it and then mount it (that's what I do).

I have to agree with Jamie, CDs are just so 90s, not to mention cumbersome.

Yep I must say carying a USB stick these days is a little more portable, or a phone with USB capabilities. 8 gig mem sticks are getting close to the same price of a DVD writer.

Try RDP-ing to your desktop through a phone and using MMF2
You can also get USB DVD/CD Drives too.

Yes you could store copies of your CDs on your hard drive or other device then point the updates to that to do the upgrades.

I know having to have the CDs and a current valid serial number to update is a bit of a pain for honest users but it could change next time we press a CD.

Ever thought of Distributing MMF through Steam or an internet based solution and or Dongle/usb protection? Or make a DVD.

Re: Updating without a function cd-drive

Yes there have been talk of how we will distribute in the future but nothing decided. I don't think we will be doing anything different until MMF 3 comes around. So thats a bit in the future

I don't really like dongles and the schools we work with HATE them, but some sort of download option would be cool.

Maybe Steam... thats an interesting idea.

Yes, please do not go with the dongle option. Lightwave comes with a dongle for it to work and it's a real pain at night, working on my laptop and I decide to do some work with Lightwave, and I have to hop inside to pull the dongle out of my desktop. Also, I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing my dongle on trips with me. Lose it and your screwed!
