    More Trial Object Questions

I've been looking through the help for the Trial object and I find it confusing.

    First I find:
    Important
The current version of the Trial Period object only works if the user is logged as administrator of the machine. If, for example, the application is run under a limited user account, the data won't be stored on the machine and the object will not work.

    Then later:
Shared by all users : if this option is selected, then the expiration date & private info will be shared by all the users of the machine. Warning: if this option is selected, the program will have to be executed with administrator rights (not recommended).

If the above statement says you have to have administrative rights, then how can you uncheck shared by all users (which would imply that you would not have to have adminstrative rights) and what is then meant by not recommended.

Could someone make it clearer when one should click on the shared by all users box and what are the pros and cons of doing so. And what is the real world meaning of needing to have adminstrative right?

Any help in making this clearer would be much appreciated.

    Steve

ps: It is stated in the help that the date is stored (somewhere if you have administrative rights?), so moving the windows date should not effect the operation of the trial object.

    Re: More Trial Object Questions

Ah, we probably forgot to remove the "Important" section when we have added the "Shared by all users" option, sorry.

If you select the "Shared by all users", then the application must be run either from an administrator account (on XP/2000), or with admin rights on Vista (you can select it in the properties of the application).

If you don't select the "Shared by all users" option, the object will work even if you run from a limited user account and/or without admin rights on Vista. In this case though, the protection will be limited to the current user. So when the demo expires, if he recreates a new user account and installs the demo on this account, it will work again.

    Re: More Trial Object Questions

If I have made demos using the trial object in MMF 1.5, how does this compare to using it in MMF 2. Will these demos act as if they are bring run by an administrator account or as if a limited user account (which means that it will run again if a new user name is applied)?

The data is not able to be written if you have a limited user account. Either you don't have permission to edit the registr area or access to the windows system folders.

Just get the app to not run if the user is not admin or set the other option to allow per user. The app trial will run out depending on when it's run.
