Resizing the display to fill window size

Heya, I'm working on a 2d overhead game and really need the ability to zoom out. Being that that isn't really possible without haveing the edges of the screan cut off I was thinking about cheating it by setting the resolution to 1600 x 1200 and then resizing the display to fit the resolution of the monitor

I am trying to avoid having to further shrink my art assets as I will be zooming in on them and would like them to maintain a level of quality.

I also want to avoid having the game actually run in 1600x1200 as many monitors wont support it.

I have a beefy machine (and my low end box just blew up) so it's hard for me to know how much of an impact the resizing the resolution will have on performance.

Does anyone have experience doing something similar? if so could you let me know what the performance ramifications are on lower end machines?

Ga I answered my own question

My framerate actually dropped and I have a quad core 0_o. I didn't think that could happen lol.

Let me change this post to a sort of poll. Is 1280x1024 too high a resolution for anyones monitors? I'm curious to see how many people have computers/monitors that would have a problem with that res

No, even the most inexpensive modern monitors support a maximum of 1280x1024.

I don't support this resolution because my screen is 16/10.
    My maximum resolution is 1440x900.

Also, the average resolution for users is 1024x768.

That's the average resolution, but I work with computers as an IT and every computer that I've looked at supports 1024x1280 resolution, whether it is widescreen or not.
