creating a temporary dash for the player character

i'm helping with a platformer/shooter and i want my character to be able to dash for a set distance. i want this to be done by double tapping d or a - i've already gotten double tap detection working with Time X events.

so basically, what is the best way to make the player character move in a specific direction, for a specific distance and then return movement control to the player?

You could create multiple movements for the Player object (under the Movements tab) and switch the movement to Bouncing Ball or Path for however long you need to complete the dash, then switch back.
