Can I insert an Animated Gif in picture object?

I tried to put an animated gif file I created in the picture object and active picture object, but it does not animate? Is there a way to have an animated gif in these objects? If not, is there a possible way to do it, or an extension available?

I think you should use Active Object for animating. Separate your animated gif to each picture file and add them to Active Object.

When you import the gif to your active, make sure that "import as animation" is checked and it will import all frames.
