    Rotating objects: diagonals look bad

I need 32 directions for my object. I drew it and rotated it. Although I tried different sizes the result always looks bad. The 8 way-directions are ok but the lower angles look horrible. The image is distorted, colors are changed. A bright yellow changes to several different yellows and everything is blurred.

I tried to rotate my object with Corel Photopaint but the problem remained.

I drew my object rather big and now I need to resize it to 39x20 and create all 32 directions. Resizing within MMF2 blurs everything as well. Same for Photopaint. It only work with Windows Paint. LOL Still the problem remains how to get all 32 directions without distorting the lower angles.

It is supposed to work because the default objects in MMF2 do not have this problem.

    Please help!

Hm... MMF2, I think, uses one of the faster "sprite rotate" functions as opposed to one who gives better results, but are slower.

It could be a relic from the old times when computers simply didn't have the power to spin them in a better way, or that better looking rotation requires anti-aliasing which they didn't want to enable by default. I don't know.

I believe there should be an extension for rotating an object with a bit of nicer effect - OR you can start working with the MMF2 HWA beta. Then the rotated sprites will look very tasty

Re: Rotating objects: diagonals look bad

This is my kart, with Billy Blaubeere in it (maybe you know my game Billy Blaubeere). This is how it should look.

The same big version with the small version next to it. For the actual game I want to use the small version.

When I resize the big version the colors are distorted and look like:

Some angles look really, really bad...

I'd be grateful if someone could help me.

its related to anti aliasing. if you do this in a paint package you get the same result. not sure how to reslove it though

You are always going to get some distortion at the size you are working in. But at that small a resolution, I doubt anyone will notice. Besides, if your cars are in motion, you won't be able to notice it anyway.

The anti-aliasing you see is probably better than not having any at all, but you are most likely going to have to hand tweak all your frames. Any automation you go for is going to look messy no matter what. If you have Photoshop, you can rotate the car using "Nearest Neighbor" filtering and there will be no anti-aliasing. But that will require you to do your own smoothing by hand.

Re: Rotating objects: diagonals look bad

Thanks. In Corel Photopaint you can resize images with anti-alising set to on or off. Rotations have this option, too.
I need some more time to get a satisfactory result.
