HWA : Game lagging because of Layer effects

Using HWA, I have a layer that has the effect "Subtract". But what happens is that my game goes SUPER slow (it's just too slow I can't allow to run like that)because of the layer. I tried setting the layer's effect back to "none" and the lagg went away and the fps restored. I need this layer for my game so I have no choice but to leave it.

Is there any way for this to stop lagging or do I have to wait for another version of HWA that possibly fixes this bug?

    I would say wait

Unless you coded it with an always event or something then I might think the coding is causing the slowdown rather then the HWA. Hard to say without seeing your file.

Re: HWA : Game lagging because of Layer effects

What video card do you have, and what resolution is your game? HWA doesn't use the old ink effects (it cannot in fact), it uses Pixel Shaders, and unless your video card is up to it, you may have trouble getting it to run with any speed.

I have two machines with Core 2 Duo processors running at the same clock speed. One has an ATI Radeon X1950 Pro, and gets 50-110 FPS in my 1024x768 multilayer shader demo, and the other has a bare bones integrated video chip and gets 15-17 FPS. If you are using shaders on an entire layer (or more), the pixel shader performance of your video card is extremely important.

This is very significant for anyone planning commercial HWA games. Your target audience must have a capable 3D card in order to use all the nifty effects that are now possible. Unlike standard MMF, e-Machines-like entry level PCs are highly unlikely to perform well with shader effects.

Re: HWA : Game lagging because of Layer effects

My game is SET to run at 60 fps, before I set the layer effect my game RAN at around 58-64.

After I set the effect it dropped down to 20.

I don't have a GOOD graphics card, (I can't run call Of Duty 4 because it's not good enough) but I can run other games like farcry, half life, etc.

As Jeff said, it's hard to say anything without seeing your file, could you send me a copy? (just the frame where the problem happens)

Re: HWA : Game lagging because of Layer effects

I'd just like to add that the speed of the game varies a LOT on different machines when using whole layer effects.

    My game with layer effects:
    My machine: 400-500fps
    My sisters laptop: 10-30fps

My game with lots of objects with effects:
    My machine: 400-500fps
My sisters laptop: full speed (didn't check it with a maxed out framerate)

For info the layer effects have been optimized in the new version, they are faster.

Yves, are you aware of that display bug with some layer effects?

When you have an active that's semi-transparent, and use an effect like "Sine Wave" by sphax, it could be that this semi-transparent active acts like a mask, it subtracts pixels, makes the underlying pixels transparent so you can see the background color...
    It's kind of weird.

Yes it's a known issue. I see what happens but I don't see how to fix it... [crazy]
