Search for extension

How I can search for extension of a file.
For example I have this file: example.jpg
I want to maintain the "example" but to search for the extension.
I've search and find this: You can include several extensions for one type of files, separate them with a semi-colon, e.g. "Image Files|*.bmp;*.pcx"
I've put this code but it doesn't working:
example|*.jpg;*.bmp (if jpg not exist then search for bmp and so on...)
How I can do this ?

I don't know where is the problem...
1. It can't load the picture.jpg
2. If I delete the picture.jpg and create picture.bmp can't load it.
Someone can help me ?
