    Network Object Failing

Hi, I'm using the network object to communicate between 2 computers. It works fine when both programs are on one computer. But when I run the 2 programs on separate computers, it doesn't work. Does anybody know what could cause this? I've checked firewalls and port forwarding. And both computers are on the same network. One computer is Vista, the other is XP.

Please don't tell me to not use the network object, I've tried using Moo, and I hate it with a passion now because it doesn't seem to acknowledge the existence of LAN.

    Re: Network Object Failing

I never use the network object, but I would want to to try it out. Depending on what you are trying to do in your application, there is one easy way to communicate between multiple computers in various locations. What I usually do (if you have a website or free hosting site) is ftp a text file to a directory on my server and use live receiver to grab that data.

For instance in one application, I set an "ID" in the registry of each application running on a PC. I make the master application the sender and the slave applications the receivers. I have a text file with a series of strings and values that the receiving computers take in every few seconds.

The applications receives the strings in the text file and use that information to relate to the events in my application. I can have certain computers only respond based on if the registry string ("ID") is equal to a line parsed in the text file, or a string that will reflect a change on all the PCs.

It sounds a little complex, but it has been the most reliable and easy way for me to have applications responds to eachother. I can even shutdown certain computers based on the text file alone, or monitor if a computer is still running the application.

Do you have the MS client network enabled on all the machines?

    Re: Network Object Failing

Hmm... I think both computers are on the same workgroup. On my Vista machine, I can't get into the xp machine, it keeps saying it doesn't exist or some BS like that. But on the XP machine, I can get into the vista machine.

Also, I just tried it out here at school (all the pcs here use xp, and a physical LAN line, not wireless) and it worked.

I'll use mooclick if you can show me how to get it to work without having to know the other computer's ip address (or how to get it within the program).

I'm not sure what the MS client network is, so I might not have it enabled (and it just may be enabled here at school). Could you tell me how to enable it?

EDIT: Ok I've just tested it out on a different set of computers at school (xp and xp as well), and it DIDN'T work this time. This is really starting to irritate me...

The computer's hostname on the LAN should work too.

    Re: Network Object Failing

Well it managed to get the names of the other computers on the network, but it didn't get the ip addresses. Maybe it's having the same problem that the network object was having that was keeping it from sending messages?
