Vista 64-bit causing massive slow down?

Yo everyone. I recently purchased an ASUS X83VM laptop with a 2.26Ghz processor, 4GB of RAM and a Nvidia GeForce 9600M GS 1GB ram video card running on Vista 64-bit.

Given the specs I thought that Fusion would run rather well. However all of my game files run VERY slow and choppy, but my old desktop that has half the specs runs Fusion MUCH faster and smoother. Even a game file that has only one object has lag. All other programs run smooth and fast as expected.

I have downloaded all windows updates and nvidia drivers and the same problem still occurs.

Is anyone experiencing a similar problem? Is this a Vista issue or a video card issue? Is it possible that it's because I am running under 64-bit? can anyone verify that 32-bit works well?

It's "possible" that I could downgrade to XP but drivers for my hardware may not be available. I'll be trying to figure it out. Any input is appreciated.

Well I don't have a 64 bit OS but I remember hearing something about a compatibility option for 32 bit programs or something... I really have no clue otherwise.

I used to use Windows Vista 64bit and I have absolutely no problems with it. The emulation used to run 32bit software has zero impact on performance what so ever.

Maybe Compatibility Mode (Windows XP)? For RPG Maker XP it's works fine, so maybe...

It's a laptop, so is it running on mains while you're testing this?

A lot of laptops drastically reduce performance when on batteries to extend battery life.

You also might want to check your video drivers and directX versions. Worth a shot.

I recently got one of those netbooks -- Low power Atom 1.6 CPU running windows XP with 1 gig memory.

A couple test of MMF creations and it ran amazingly well.

My dad's running vista x64 and MMF works perfect on it. Didn't have to use any compatibility modes (Those never helped. They never got any app working. They just suck.)

Re: Vista 64-bit causing massive slow down?

Well I have vista x64 on a desktop computer and have no problems at all.

It has to be something with your laptop, along the line of what Dynasoft suggested.

Also, what background processes are running? Are there other programs that could be eating up CPU performance? I wouldn't think it would be a RAM issue, as you are using a 64 bit OS with 4 gigs of RAM, so that rules that out.

Also, I wouldn't downgrade your OS. If you have to have XP, partition the hard drive and dual boot.

I wouldn't downgrade because Vista is fine and XP costs money.
