What's wrong with my frame rate?

I have my game set to have a frame rate of 50fps. Apparently, it doesn't look like it is 50fps and looks more like it is 20-30fps. Occasionally, my computer does not lag like that and shows the rate of the game properly. This does not happen in just MMF2, but in everything. My computer did not have this problem before until recently. I tried defragmenting my computer and everything. What do I need to do to get the speedy frame rate again?

Run the task manager (the ctrl+alt+del screen) and order the processes in order of 'CPU'. There might be a rogue process which is just hogging your computer.

Strange, there does not seem to be anything unusual. There does not seem to be any processes that are taking up memory. Maybe it's just the stuff on my computer...

You mentioned defragmenting - try also running a spyware scan with something like Spybot, and a process scan with HijackThis.

The last time I had chronic sudden slowdown it was because of upgrading to Service Pack 2, so I wouldn't rule out any recent Windows updates, either!
